First impressions of Dubai: As a first-time visitor to Dubai, arriving at the airport, I could immediately see by the opulent design features and the grand scale of things, that this stopover was going to be a memorable cultural experience. As soon as we stepped outside the airport building, it felt like stepping into an outdoor sauna, as the hot humid air hits you. This is expected in the heart of summer. We were ushered to a taxi with a female driver, to take us to our hotel. This is perfect if you are a female solo traveller and prefer…

Utrecht: Utrecht is one of the hidden gems of the Netherlands. Located only 35 minutes by train from Schiphol airport and under 30 minutes to Amsterdam. It is small enough to explore by foot and boasts historical buildings, modern architecture, museums, Dutch charm and one of the largest shopping malls in the Netherlands. They have adopted the European terrace restaurant culture, so locals and tourist alike can enjoy meals and drinks alfresco. Some of the main attractions in Utrecht are Schroder House, Oudegracht canal, The Dom cathedral, the Miffy Museum and Hoog Catharijne. Locals appear to be very proud of…

The Black Forest. Miles and miles of dense evergreen forest. Germany is one of my favourite countries to visit. I’ve been to Germany a few times before but never managed to visit the Black forest. I finally decided to go and we based ourselves in the small picturesque town of Gengenbach. It is located on the outskirts of the Black forest and less busier than Freiburg, which is one of the more popular Black Forest towns. We stayed at the Weinhotel Pfeffer and Salz (Pepper and Salt) hotel, which is located 20 minutes walk out of town. The hotel has…

Vitra Design Museum. What was once a charred landscape after the campus was partially destructed in a fire, has become a spectacular exhibition of modern buildings and design craftmanship. When I first learnt about iconic Architects such as Zaha Hadid and Tadao Ando in my first year of studies, I dreamt about visiting some of these buildings. Years later, I finally got to see the buildings in the flesh and experience walking through them. The museum is located in Germany, close to Swiss and French border. We made our way to Wheil Am Rhein, from Basel, which is the closest…

Basel. A start to our European journey. We arrived at EuroAirport Basel international airport, which is located in the tri-national Upper Rhine Region in France, but close to both Switzerland and Germany. Upon arrival at the airport, we found that as tourists, with a valid hotel booking, we could use public transport to get to the Basel city centre, free of charge. I normally prefer taking public transport, as I believe you get to see more of the city, and have more of an authentic experience this way. We manage to ride on one of the trams a few times,…

20 Fenchurch Street. One of 2 buildings on my list that I had to visit on my trip to London. It was designed by world renowned Architect, Rafael Viñoly. The building is has been designed so that it is slightly larger at the top than at the bottom, and hence it’s nickname, the Walkie-Talkie. The sky garden is located on the upper three storeys of the building.       The main attractions to public visitors, is the Sky Garden on the 36th floor. The steel and glass structure allows for 360 views over the City of London. Entrance is free…

Visiting London was long overdue. When one of my best friends decided to visit London this summer, we decided a reunion was in order. We chose to fly Emirates and stopover in Dubai. This also afforded us the opportunity to fly on the Airbus A380, which I have been wanting to fly in for a while. I enjoyed flying on this double-decker aircraft, the spaciousness and in-flight comforts, definitely made the long haul flight more pleasant. This was my third time flying with Emirates airlines, and they did not disappoint, their service was superior, as always. The first thing I…
