Utrecht:

Utrecht is one of the hidden gems of the Netherlands. Located only 35 minutes by train from Schiphol airport and under 30 minutes to Amsterdam. It is small enough to explore by foot and boasts historical buildings, modern architecture, museums, Dutch charm and one of the largest shopping malls in the Netherlands. They have adopted the European terrace restaurant culture, so locals and tourist alike can enjoy meals and drinks alfresco.

Some of the main attractions in Utrecht are Schroder House, Oudegracht canal, The Dom cathedral, the Miffy Museum and Hoog Catharijne. Locals appear to be very proud of Mondrian, as various design related items can be spotted in window fronts, dotted across the city centre. Antique stores are in abundance in the city centre, where we found one section of street had antique stores on every block. They stocked everything from the usual antiques, crystal chandeliers, jewellery to swords.

Utrecht Old Dock cellars:

We stayed in self-catering accommodation in Utrecht city centre, in one of the old dock cellars that was converted into residential accommodation. It was definitely an historical experience staying in these. Complete with musty cellar smell, which added to the ambience and uniqueness of our stay. The small paved area in front of the accommodation allowed us the opportunity for sundowners and breakfast overlooking the canal, with boats and canoes passing by.

Utrecht by Canal:

We explored Utrecht by canal for a different view of this city. The Oudegracht canal is about 2 kilometres long and there are options to take a boat tour or hire a canal for a few hours. We hired a canal as we love rowing. Navigating our way on the Oudegracht canal was fairly straightforward and it offers a below street view of the city. You cannot get lost on this circular route, if you follow the map given to you when you hired the canoe. Some cellars were converted into restaurants, studios, shops or accommodation and this really adds to the appeal of the canal tours and city experience.

As in every city in Netherlands I have been to, there are more bicycles on the roads than cars. Utrecht is no different. My husband and I enjoyed having a tipple on the side walk, at local bars and people watch. Something we found completely unique, were families passing by, going for dinner on their bicycles. I totally admire the environmentally activeness and consciousness of the Dutch people! Watching these skilled cyclists, as they send text messages, cycle without holding onto the handle bars and navigate their way through the narrows streets whilst avoiding oncoming cars, pedestrians and other cyclists, was quite a spectacle.

Some of the local drinks we tried were Barbar, an ale with a subtle honey flavour and La Trappe Trappist bockbier. If you have a sweet tooth, the local chocolate to try is Jonny Doodle.

Overall, this city makes for a perfect weekend city break away or a two day stopover, without the crowds of Amsterdam! Where to next? Adventure awaits!
